The CPMR was invited to provide a regional perspective at the conference organised by DG Mare (European Commission) and the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 14 June in Odessa.

Regional authorities have, in effect, responsibilities in a wide range of marine activities, including coastal zone management, fisheries and tourism.

Patrick Anvroin, Director in charge of the CPMR Balkan and Black Sea Commission, informed the participants of the organisation’s projects in this part of Europe. He particularly highlighted the “Vasco da Gama for the Black Sea” project, which aims to build a real community of maritime education institutions around the Black Sea, under the coordination of the Varna Naval Academy (Bulgaria). An application will be submitted under the first call for projects of the Black Sea Basin cross border cooperation programme, which will be launched on 14 July in Constanta (Romania)

A Memorandum of Understanding is about to be signed between the CPMR and BSEC (Black Sea Economic Cooperation), an intergovernmental organisation bringing together all the States of the Black Sea region. BSEC and CPMR wish to work jointly on the issue of maritime policies in the Black Sea. This synergy between Regions, States and DG Mare would guarantee the success of maritime initiatives in this area.
